Tossals Verds Circuit Trail, Tramuntana Mountains, Mallorca

Puig des Tossals Verds (1118 m) is a peak in the central Tramuntana Mountains on the Balearic Island of Mallorca, Spain.

A fantastic circuit trail widely loops around Puig des Tossals Verds, following the GR 221 Dry Stone Route almost the whole way. This day hike starts at the Cúber Reservoir, along the scenic Ma-10 road.

We loved this trail because it’s scenically varied. The trail meanders between beautiful limestone mountains, above narrow gorges, through olive groves and oak forests, and along a long water canal.

Additionally, we enjoyed this route, because it’s very easy to follow. The whole Tossals Verds hike is signed and consistently waymarked. There’s absolutely no confusion about where to go.

In terms of difficulty, we’d say this is a moderate trail. The path is at times very rocky and uneven, which can be difficult if you’re not hiking in limestone terrain on a consistent basis.

The elevation gain and loss is well distributed throughout. Aside from the initial ascent, it’s unlikely that you’ll feel winded.

Puig des Tossals Verds Circuit Trail Description

Cúber to Coll de sa Coma des Ases (20 minutes)

Cúber to Coll de sa Coma des Ases Trail, Mallorca

The Tossals Verds loop trail doesn’t lead to the shores of the reservoir. You can detour to the reservoir before, or after the hike.

We parked in the upper car park, above the bus stop. Locate the GR 221 signs in the direction of Pas Llis and Refugi des Tossals Verds

Step over the stile and follow the path, parallel to the road, for about one minute. At the next signed trail intersection, turn left in the direction of GR 221 Pas Llis, signed 1 hour 50 minutes.

This path ascends along a series of switchbacks to Coll de sa Coma des Ases saddle (903 meters).

As you gain elevation, you’ll see both the Cúber and Gorg Blau Reservoirs. It’s also easy to spot Puig Major (1436 m), Mallorca’s highest mountain, because it’s crowned with a radar station.

When you reach the ridge, follow the stone wall until there’s a gap in the wall. This is the Coll de sa Coma des Ases.

Step through the stone wall and head south downhill. The GR 221 path is clearly etched across the wide-open landscape below.

The flat-topped mountain straight ahead is Puig de s’Alcadena (817 m) and to the right is Puig d’Alaró (821 m).

The trail steadily descends the high valley towards the Torrent d’Almedra (also spelled Torrent d’Almadrà) stream.

As you near the craggy walls flanking Torrent d’Almadrà, the path gets increasingly rocky.

Pas Llis secured passage, Mallorca

The trail dips below the treeline and clings to the mountainside.

Soon you’ll reach a secured passage, which aids you up across the rocky step of Pas Llis (640 m).

Pas Llis to Refugio Tossal Verds (50 minutes)

Cuber to Tossals Verds Refuge trail, Mallorca

After the pass, the trail leads southeast away from Torrent d’Almadra

The undulating path traverses rocky limestone terrain and some boulders.

After about 40 minutes, the trail enters a beautiful olive grove. The path twists down the terraced grove and then makes a counter-ascent to the other side of the valley.

At the signed intersection, turn right in the direction of Refugi Tossals Verds. A cobbled path lined with a wooden railing guides you over a ridge and down to the stone refuge.

Refugi Tossals Verds (540 m) is a managed refuge, situated at the foot of the Tossals Verds massif.

They start serving lunch at 1:30 pm. If you arrive earlier, you can only order hot and cold drinks. Bring cash. There are some inviting picnic tables just outside the refuge.

Refugi Tossals Verds to Ses Cases Velles Saddle (30 minutes)

Tossals Verds Refuge, Mallorca

From the refuge, follow the GR 221 signs in the direction of Ses Casses Velles

The path picks up behind the refuge and steadily ascends through more olive trees.

After 7 minutes, the trail divides. Bear right, staying on the GR 221 trail in the direction of Ses Casses Valles and Font des Noguer.

Following a mostly level path, the trail steers you northeast, above a narrow valley.

At the wide Ses Cases Velles (707 m) saddle, the two trails from Refugi de Tossals Verds converge.

Torrent des Prat, Tossals Verds Circuit Trail, Mallorca

Follow signs to Font des Prat and Cúber.

The circuit trail, now relatively flat, steers you towards the stream bed of Torrent des Prat

Cross the stream using the sturdy stone pillars. Shortly thereafter, cross the stream again along the plank bridge.

The path leads away from the stream. At the next trail junction, head left in the direction of Font des Noguer and Cúber, signed 1 hour 6 minutes.

Follow the forest trail for another 7 minutes to Coll des Coloms Pass (808 m). This is where the ascent route to Puig des Tossals Verds (1118 m) begins.

Coll des Coloms to Cúber (50 minutes)

Canal des Embassaments, Tramuntana Mountains, Mallorca

The trail descends gently through a holm oak forest. You’ll cross a stone wall and then walk over the Canal des Embassaments via a concrete pathway.

A very comfortable walking path runs parallel to the water canal all the way back to the parking lot at Cúber Reservoir.

The views of Puig Major and the Embassament de Gorg Blau are very impressive.

The final leg of the Tossals Verds circuit trail is flat, easy and enjoyable.
