Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel in Val di Fassa: Best Luxury Hotel in Canazei, Dolomites

Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel is a 4-star boutique luxury hotel in the village of Canazei (Cianacei in Ladin) in Val di Fassa, Italian Dolomites. In two words, this hotel is flawless and visionary.

As its name suggests, Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel is an ode to art. It’s the passion project of Sergio and Emanuela Rossi, who have spent a lifetime collecting art, in addition to having run the famous Rifugio Fuciade for decades.

Art tastefully adorns every area of the hotel in unique and surprising ways. The hotel entrance is guarded by a giant bust sculpted by Mexican artist Javier Marín. The facade harbors a whimsical mural by Fassa Valley painter Alberto Detomas (“Albo”) and a striking male figure sculpted by Trentino artist Matthias Sieff

Additionally, each bedroom showcases the original artwork of an artist. It’s essentially a living art gallery.

In addition to the art concept, we relished the hotel’s casual atmosphere, innovative Ladin cuisine, professional yet approachable staff, bold design, and sheer comfort.

An enormous amount of love and dedication was poured into the creation of this hotel. You can see it in the thoughtfulness of each and every design decision, menu item, amenity, and of course the ubiquitous, sexy-as-hell logo.

The logo is based on a small wooden sculpture by local artist Feliciano Costa (“Parolot”). The original piece is located in the hotel lobby.

Another reason to love Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel is that it’s a zero-emissions building, Energy Class A.

The Location

Canazei is located in the province of Trentino in Northeastern Italy.

The village is situated at an elevation of 1450 meters in upper Val di Fassa, a historic Ladin valley.

Canazei is located near the Sella Group, Sassolungo/Langkofel Group, the Marmolada, and the Catinaccio/Rosengarten Mountains.

In summer, Canazei is a popular base for hiking and via ferrata climbing. Its advantageous proximity to Sella Pass and Pordoi Pass make the famous Sassolungo Circuit Trail, Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata (to the summit of Sasso Piatto/Plattkofel), and the Sentiero Viel del Pan trails easily accessible.

In winter, Canazei is a major ski resort, with direct access to the Belvedere, Ciampac, Col Rodella and Marmolada ski areas.

Breakfast

A breakfast buffet is laid out on the first floor between 7 am and 10:30 am. The buffet comprises homemade pastries, homemade bread and jam, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, cold cuts and cheeses, bacon and vegetables.

In addition, coffee, fresh-squeezed juices, and made-to-order eggs and crepes/pancakes are served.

Dinner

Mille-feuille with red turnip, goat cheese and mint, Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel

The hotel restaurant Alla Locanda features innovative Ladin cuisine. Each menu item is a unique creation reflective of the region and the season.

A daily, changing tasting menu is also available.

The menu is experimental and unconventional. Here are a few dishes we savored:

Appetizer

  • Mille-feuille with red turnip, goat cheese and mint
  • Organic poached egg, creamy mushroom soup, flakes of semi aged cheese and toast

First Course

  • Potato pearls filled with local cheese, black truffle, almonds and beetroot
  • Roasted broccoli tagliolini with butter, fermented lemon and slightly smoked foam

Main Course

  • Roasted radicchio and its broth with gorgonzola cheese foam and coated in walnuts

Dessert

  • Hazelnut mini pie, cinnamon mousse, and cranberry ice cream

We recommend reserving a table and eating á la carte. Half board is also an option. However, the portions are large, so eating four courses may prove to be a struggle, even if you worship food like we do.

Wine lovers will appreciate the hotel’s extensive wine cellar, featuring over 300 regional and international wines.

The hotel restaurant is open between 7 pm and 9 pm.

Hotel Bar: Bistrot Artù

Bistrot Artù, Locanda degli Artisti art hotel, Canazei, Dolomites

Bistrot Artù is located on the ground floor, next to the restaurant. It’s a local gathering place, open to everyone. Because the hotel is integrated into village life, it feels far more buoyant and lively than other hotel bars.

During the day, you can order from the bistrot menu, which features cheese boards, marinated salmon carpaccio, fresh seasonal salad, and cakes. Between 12 pm – 2:30 pm and 7 pm –  9pm, there are additional menu items.

Drinking a local beer, or wine here is a wonderful way to wind down after a day of hiking, or skiing.

Final Thoughts

Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel Facade, Dolomites

Locanda Degli Artisti Art Hotel is an excellent hotel. We had a stellar experience and wholeheartedly recommend staying here.

The only thing the hotel lacks is a wellness & spa area. However, if you book a junior suite with a sauna, you’ll be able to enjoy a sauna experience in the privacy of your own room.
