How to Get to Guayedra Beach (Playa de Guayedra) in Gran Canaria, Spain

Playa de Guayedra is a black volcanic sand beach studded with stones in the north of Gran Canaria, close to Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves. More specifically, this wild beach is located at the end of the Guayedra Ravine within Tamadaba Natural Park.

The best way to get to Guayedra Beach is by hiking from Agaete (1 hour one-way). The path delivers sensational views of the rugged west coast, including the Roque Faneque cliffs, the Dedo de Dios (“God’s Finger”) sea stack and the Puerto de las Nieves port. 

Playa de Guayedra feels like a secret oasis, far from the madding crowds. However, it has already made its on-screen debut in the Netflix fantasy series, The Witcher.

In Season 1 Episode 4, at the end of the assassin sequence, Yennefer teleports to Guayedra Beach cradling the body of Kalis’ baby girl. She delivers a bitter monologue before burying the infant on the black sandy shore.

Where to Start the Hike to Guayedra Beach

GC-172 / GC-200 Crossroads

The trail begins along the GC-172 road in Agaete, at the La Aldea GC-200 turn-off. 

There’s free street parking along GC-172. 

The trailhead is marked with a map board and trail signs. 

If you’re coming from the Puerto de las Nieves fishing village, just walk up GC-172 for 10 minutes, passing a round-about and the La Palmita restaurant. The trail starts on the right side of the road, at the GC-172 / GC-200 intersection.

Agaete to Guayedra Beach Trail Description

Agaete to GC-200 (15 – 20 minutes)

Follow trail SL-1 to Guayedra Beach (2.4 km). The trail follows a cobbled pedestrian walkway for a few meters, and then bears left on a hiking trail. 

The wide hiking trail steadily ascends a hill carpeted with euphorbia balsamifera and some Euphorbia canariensis (Canary Island spurge). Looking back, the views of the white-washed town of Agaete get better and better as you gain elevation. 

After about 15-20 minutes of hiking uphill, the trail intersects with the busy GC-200 scenic road.

GC-200 (10 minutes)

Turn right and cautiously follow this paved road for about half a kilometer. 

On the ocean-side, it’s possible to follow a narrow footpath along the guard railing most of the way, but not all the way. You’ll have to hop over the railing, when this path drops off. 

From the rock fall road sign, it’s only 160 meters until the trail starts again, on the right side of the road.

The views along the road are some of the best that Gran Canaria has to offer. We loved the beach, but we loved this roadside vantage point just as much.

GC-200 to Guayedra Beach (25 minutes) 

Trail signs along the road steer you down to the beach, which is located at the base of the Guayedra ravine. It’s a 160 meter descent to the shore. 

Initially, the trail is aided with some railings. 

The path is steep in some places and best undertaken with sturdy shoes, or hiking boots. 

Just before reaching the beach, there’s one tricky passage down volcanic rock, which requires some extra caution. 

When you reach the beach, turn right. The northern part of the beach is sandier than the southern part.

Guayedra Beach is a pristine, wild beach. There’s no lifeguard on duty, so please exercise extra caution when swimming. There are no facilities, or trash bins. Please pack out all your trash and belongings.

Return to Agaete

Follow the same trail back to Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves. On the return journey, you’ll see the port and harbor of Puerto de las Nieves and the Dedo de Dios sea stack.

Driving to Guayedra Beach

Technically, there is also road access to the beach, but this precarious, unpaved road lacks guard railing.

It leads from GC-200 along the mountainside, with a vertical drop to the Guayedra ravine on one-side. Here’s the Guayedra Beach road on Google Maps.

We highly suggest skipping this unsafe road, because the alternative hike is far better. 

Additionally, parking is limited and the trail to the beach from the road may be closed, due to landslides.

Puerto de las Nieves

We highly recommend staying in the fishing village of Puerto de las Nieves, which is also the port of Agaete. The best accommodation is Hotel & Spa Cordial Roca Negra followed by Hotel Puerto de las Nieves. Puerto de las Nieves is very charming and has a lot to offer: multiple harbor-side restaurants, a scenic beach, a wonderful promenade, and public volcanic rock pools. 

Midrange | Hotel Puerto de Las Nieves is centrally located in Puerto de las Nieves, a short walk to the port restaurants, Playa de las Nieves beach, and Agaete Piscina Natural pools. Breakfast is included in the room rate. Hotel features include indoor swimming pool, indoor whirlpool, and a free private underground parking garage.

Luxury | Hotel & Spa Cordial Roca Negra is the finest accommodation in Puerto de las Nieves, Agaete, featuring a swimming pool, whirlpool, sky rooftop bar, on-site restaurant, and spa (extra charge). The hotel occupies an elevated position on a cliff, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It’s connected to the coastal promenade and the Agaete natural pools by a pedestrian stairway path (4 minute walk).

Rooms are modern, spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast is included in the rate, and half board is optional. The staff is attentive and eager to please. Guests can park along the street for free, or park in the hotel’s paid parking garage.

Agaete

The white-washed town of Agaete is located inland, about 1.3 km from the Puerto de las Nieves and the coast. Though it’s a lovely town, it’s not as animated as Puerto de las Nieves. If you stay in Agaete, you can walk to Puerto de las Nieves in 15-20 minutes. Agaete, however, has more budget-friendly options including Casa Calma Yoga Guesthouse (hostel), Casa Luna (guesthouse), and Harizan (apartment).

Budget | Casa Calma Yoga Guesthouse is a cheerful and social hostel in Agaete, offering double rooms as well as dormitory beds. All rooms have a shared bathroom and shower. Guests have access to a shared kitchen and lounge. Stay here if you want to connect with other travelers. 

Look for accommodation in Agaete.
