San Pedro – Era de Berbique – Agaete Day Hike, Gran Canaria

San Pedro is a hamlet in Agaete Valley (Valle de Agaete in Spanish) in northwest Gran Canaria. 

A short, but stellar point-to-point hike leads from San Pedro up to Era de Berbique, an old threshing floor, and then down to Agaete and/or Puerto de las Nieves, the port of Agaete. 

This trail is signed and in excellent condition. Overall, it’s a moderate hike with excellent views of Agaete Valley, the Riscos de Tamadaba, Roque Faneque cliffs, and the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. There’s no technical difficulty. 

The path initially follows the pilgrim route Camino de los Romeros, passing the Cuevas de Berbique caves along the way. The Cuevas de Berbique archeological complex is a Guanche (indigenous, pre-Hispanic) residential area consisting of 50 caves.

How to Get to San Pedro, Agaete Valley

Bus

As this is a point-to-point hike, it’s best to leave your car in Puerto de las Nieves, Agaete and take a bus one-way to San Pedro, the starting point of this hike.

Take Global Bus 102 from Puerto de las Nieves to San Pedro.

When we hiked this trail in January 2022, there were only 3 departures per day. The bus schedule is posted at the bus stop. It’s also synced with Google Maps.

Global buses are reliable, but they can be late. Our bus was 15 minutes late.

San Pedro to Puerto de las Nieves Trail Description

“El Lomo” San Pedro Bus Stop to Tamadaba/Berbique Trailhead 

When you exit the bus at the “El Lomo” San Pedro bus stop (along GC-231), turn right towards the ocean and then follow the descending stairway to the village center. 

Pass the Iglesia San Pedro church and another bus stop, following signs to Tamadaba (6.5 km) and Berbique (2.5 km) along trail SL-2. 

After crossing a bridge, you’ll see another set of trail signs. As you walk up the paved Camino de los Romeros, you’ll pass the driveways to two coffee plantations, including Bodega Los Berrazales. 

Agaete Valley is one of the few places in Europe where coffee is cultivated. Fertile volcanic soil combined with a year-round temperate climate makes Agaete Valley the perfect place for coffee plants to thrive. Coffee has been harvested here manually since the early 1800s.

Continue up the steep paved road. Soon, you’ll arrive at the beginning of the hiking trail, marked with trail signs. 

If you’re arriving by car, park in the village center. There’s no parking allowed directly at the trailhead.

San Pedro to Cuevas de Berbique (1 hour)

Follow SL-2 to Berbique and Tamadaba. The trail initially ascends along a white wall and fence of a residential home, lined with prickly pear cacti. 

From the very beginning, there are spectacular views of the lush Agaete valley and the white-washed San Pedro village. 

After passing a threshing circle, the trail continues uphill for a few minutes, before flattening out. The path maintains a southwest direction towards the steep crags of Tamadaba (“Riscos de Tamadaba”) along the Barranco del Chorro del Ingenio ravine. This lovely trail is lined with golden rushes and almond trees (which blossom in January). 

The trail follows the ravine bed to the ravine wall and then makes a sharp right, away from a spray of water known as La Goleta (“leak”), and continues diagonally up a slope of rushes. 

Straight ahead, the Berbique caves come into view. 

And shortly thereafter, the path climbs uphill along a series of switchbacks, secured with chains and fences. The aided section is only 140 meters in length/50 meters elevation gain.

Cuevas de Berbique to Era de Berbique (15 minutes)

The path continues to ascend through a chocolate-brown volcanic tuff landscape, which looks brittle and windswept. The path is now cobbled. 

Era de Berbique, the highest point of the trail, is an old threshing circle for grain (a large cobbled circle), located near Montaña Berbique. From here, you can see the Atlantic Ocean and the northwestern coast of Gran Canaria. 

It’s also a trail junction, where trails S-90 (to Tamadaba/Artenara), SL-2 (to San Pedro), and our trail to Agaete meet.

Era de Berbique to GC-200 (35 minutes)

Follow the sign to Agaete. The flat trail crosses slopes and leads to terraced fields, where grains were harvested until the end of the 18th century. 

With the Atlantic in full view, the trail continues to hug the mountain slopes, alternating between flat and descending passages. 

A safe, but narrow balcony-ledge trail brings you to a black volcanic sediment hill – a rise between two deeply carved ravines. 

The trail cruises downhill. To your left, you’ll see the Roque Faneque Cliffs. To your right, Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves are visible. 

The path intersects a wide black track. Turn right and follow the trail markers, which are short wooden poles with yellow stripes. 

At the next trail intersection, there’s a sign pointing to Agaete (the right trail). The left trail leads to Puerto de las Nieves. Though the left trail isn’t signed, it is clear and easy to follow. 

We opted for the left path. The wide track snakes down and ultimately intersects with the GC-200 road.

GC-200 to Puerto de las Nieves, Agaete (30 minutes)

Cautiously cross the road. 

Here, you have an option to extend your hike to Guayedra Beach (30 minutes), or you can continue down to Puerto de las Nieves. 

The wide trail (direction: Las Nieves) steadily descends for 15 minutes. At the La Palmita intersection, turn right on the cobbled pathway to the GC-172 road. 

To head down to Puerto de las Nieves, cross the road and then follow the pedestrian walkway to the coast (10 minutes).

Puerto de las Nieves

We highly recommend staying in the fishing village of Puerto de las Nieves, which is also the port of Agaete. The best accommodation is Hotel & Spa Cordial Roca Negra followed by Hotel Puerto de las Nieves. Puerto de las Nieves is very charming and has a lot to offer: multiple harbor-side restaurants, a scenic beach, a wonderful promenade, and public volcanic rock pools. 

Midrange | Hotel Puerto de Las Nieves is centrally located in Puerto de las Nieves, a short walk to the port restaurants, Playa de las Nieves beach, and Agaete Piscina Natural pools. Breakfast is included in the room rate. Hotel features include indoor swimming pool, indoor whirlpool, and a free private underground parking garage.

Luxury | Hotel & Spa Cordial Roca Negra is the finest accommodation in Puerto de las Nieves, Agaete, featuring a swimming pool, whirlpool, sky rooftop bar, on-site restaurant, and spa (extra charge). The hotel occupies an elevated position on a cliff, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It’s connected to the coastal promenade and the Agaete natural pools by a pedestrian stairway path (4 minute walk).

Rooms are modern, spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast is included in the rate, and half board is optional. The staff is attentive and eager to please. Guests can park along the street for free, or park in the hotel’s paid parking garage.

Look for accommodation in Puerto de las Nieves.

Agaete

The white-washed town of Agaete is located inland, about 1.3 km from the Puerto de las Nieves and the coast. Though it’s a lovely town, it’s not as animated as Puerto de las Nieves. If you stay in Agaete, you can walk to Puerto de las Nieves in 15-20 minutes. Agaete, however, has more budget-friendly options including Casa Calma Yoga Guesthouse (hostel), Casa Luna (guesthouse), and Harizan (apartment).

Budget | Casa Calma Yoga Guesthouse is a cheerful and social hostel in Agaete, offering double rooms as well as dormitory beds. All rooms have a shared bathroom and shower. Guests have access to a shared kitchen and lounge. Stay here if you want to connect with other travelers. 

Look for accommodation in Agaete.
