Unique Stays
1. Ljubljana
Most Slovenian trips begin in Ljubljana, as they very well should. Ljubljana is a very approachable city and one best explored on foot.
The city is bisected by the Ljubljanica River, which is lined with restaurants, hotels, and shops. In summer, the al fresco dining scene is second to none.
Romantic pedestrian bridges arch over the river, linking the inner city together. And, there’s a legion of dragons and a hilltop castle guarding the city.
The city’s architecture is a blend of Venetian baroque and Viennese secession styles.
Prešeren Square, located between the coral-pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and the elegant Triple Bridge, is the beating heart of the city. The square is named after the 19th-century Romantic poet France Prešeren.
Two nights is enough time to see the sights and to get to know Europe’s loveliest capital city.

2. Lake Bled
With its fairy-tale looks and alpine surroundings, Lake Bled is one of the most sought-after destinations in Slovenia. There’s a clifftop medieval castle, a church-crowned island, a romantic lakeside promenade, and sweeping mountain views at every turn.
Lake Bled is located at the the edge of the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, only a 50 minute drive, or bus ride away from Ljubljana.
You can visit Lake Bled all-year-round.
During your visit, you can hike up to Mala Osojnica and Ojstrica for sunrise, walking through the narrow Vintgar Gorge, and riding a traditional pletna boat to Bled Island. You can also visit Bled Castle and go out a wine tasting tour, or a food tour.
In summer, it’s wonderful to swim in the lake, because there are no motorized boats and the water is very clean.
We recommend staying two nights in Bled. However, it’s good idea to extend your trip, if you want to explore Triglav National Park. If you’re traveling by car, it’s a short drive to Pokljuka Plateau, the starting point of the Debela Peč & Brda, Viševnik, and Mount Triglav hikes.
If you’re traveling without a car, you can join a number of tours starting in Bled, including From Bled: Triglav National Park Tour, Original Emerald River Adventure, 7 Alpine Wonders- Day Tour Bled, Soca valley, Slovenia, and Canyoning Bled Slovenia.

The bus line connecting Ljubljana and Lake Bled with Lake Bohinj terminates in Ribčev Laz.
In this lakeside village, you’ll find the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Lake Bohinj Tourist Office, a Mercator (grocery store), a kayak/SUP rental shop, several accommodations including the standout Hotel Bohinj, an excellent burger joint, and a few more bars and eateries.
Apart from the convenient location and easy lake access, Ribčev Laz is the most lively destination around Lake Bohinj. Overall, Bohinj is far more sedate than Bled, so don’t expect a party. But, there are some nice outdoor gathering spaces including the Karakter Bar and the Hotel Bohinj garden.
Things To Do in Ribčev Laz
- Swim in Lake Bohinj
- Rent a Kayak and/or SUP
- Visit the Church of St. John the Baptist

Recommended Accommodation in Ribčev Laz
Hotel Bohinj
Modern and harmonious design, air-conditioned rooms, and location
The newly renovated Hotel Bohinj is located in the heart of Ribčev Laz, a mere 2-minute walk to the lake.
Hotel Bohinj is an architectural masterpiece, which celebrates the cultural heritage of Bohinj with its bold design choices and symbolic motifs. The hotel’s neutral color palette and natural textures invite you to relax and savor the beauty inside the hotel as much as outside.
Bedrooms feature air conditioning, larch floors and panelling, light fixtures evocative of tree branches, complimentary slippers made with recycled felt, an electric kettle, a desk and seating area.
Hotel Bohinj also has a lovely outdoor garden where you can relax and order drinks throughout the day, an on-site restaurant, and a wellness area (accessible as an add-on) with an outdoor whirlpool.
The breakfast buffet features yogurt, muesli, sliced cheeses and meats, local cheese, eggs and sausages, warm croissants and nutritious breads, juices, loose leaf tea, and of course coffee.
4. Stara Fužina, Lake Bohinj
Stara Fužina is a serene alpine village located on the eastern side of Lake Bohinj in Triglav National Park. From a location standpoint, Stara Fužina couldn’t be better positioned.
You have easy access to some of the most popular trailheads in the Julian Alps like Planina Blato. And, it’s a mere 10-minute walk to reach the shores of crystal-clear Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest lake.
If you’re visiting without a car, you can take advantage of the Lake Bohinj summer transit system.
In high season, you can use transit to reach Planina Blato, Rudno Polje on Pokljuka, Vogel cable car, Slap Savica, and many other trailheads and places of interest.
During your stay in Stara Fužina, we recommend hiking into the Julian Alps. You can start your hikes directly in the village, or trim off a few hundred ascending meters by driving to the high alpine pasture Planina Blato (via a toll road).
From Planina Blato, you can hike to Planina Lazu, Koča na Planini pri Jezeru, Triglav Lakes Valley (Seven Lakes Valley), and many other destinations.
More Things to Do in Stara Fužina

Hotel Majer’ca
Al fresco dining, lake views, and design concept
Hotel Majer’ca is a lovely boutique hotel in Stara Fužina. The hotel’s restaurant extends outside onto a grassy lawn, facing fields of wheat and the Julian Alps. Eating breakfast and dinner outside whilst enjoying the pastoral setting and mountain scenery is almost too good to be true.
Breakfast entails a delectable offering of cheese and meat platters, eggs, smoothies, yogurt and muesli, and more. You can order anything, and everything, from their à la carte menu (everything is included).
Our bedroom faced Lake Bohinj and was very comfortable. Rooms are equipped with a hot water cooker, instant coffee and teas, L’Occitane en Provence soaps and creams, and a Majer’ca guide to Cool Things to Do in Bohinj. When it rained during our visit, we were content just enjoying our room.
One thing to note is that not all rooms have air conditioning. If you’re visiting in July and August, we highly recommend booking a room with an air conditioner. Even with a balcony door open, it can be too warm.
5. Ukanc, Slovenia
Ukanc is a village on the western side of Lake Bohinj, on the opposite side of Stara Fužina.
The most compelling reason to stay here is the idyllic surroundings and the peace. There are no shops, or restaurants in Ukanc. So, it’s probably best to stay in apartment.
From Ukanc, you can visit Slap Savica Waterfall, hop on the Vogel Cable Car to hike Mount Vogel, and easily explore the Southern Julian Alps.
You can also walk the Zlatorog Fairy Tale Trail and follow the romantic footpath around Lake Bohinj.
Our favorite place to swim in Lake Bohinj is the beach next to the Savica river.
Insider Tip | If you’re dreaming of seeing Edelweiss, hike to Mount Rodica. Take the Vogel Cable Car to Vogel Ski Resort. From the mountain station, walk to the saddle below Šija. Turn left and follow the undulating balcony trail and ridge trail to Mount Rodica. Along the ridge, you’ll see thousands of Edelweiss (in July). Take a million photos of these felty stars, but remember that picking flowers is prohibited in Triglav National Park.
Recommended Accommodations in Ukanc

Tourist Farm Šenkova domačija
Farm animals, alpine views, and farm-to-table food
Close your eyes and envision the dreamiest alpine farm you can possibly imagine. Now, add in a dramatic backdrop of limestone mountains. Also, sprinkle in fifty free-roaming chickens and ducks. And while you’re at it, pepper in fields of wildflowers, an herb and vegetable garden, two friendly dogs (that welcome you upon arrival), and cows and sheep.
That’s Tourist Farm Šenkova domačija and you can stay there.
Dating back to the 15th century, this historic farmstead is protected as a cultural monument of national importance and subjected to strict protection. Thank goodness, because when you visit, you hope that nothing ever changes here.
In addition to the scenic wonder, Tourist Farm Šenkova domačija is the perfect base for a relaxing mountain getaway in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Opt for half board for the full experience. You definitely want to eat dinner here each night.
7. Luče
Luče is a town in Northern Slovenia, located in the Eastern part of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Like Jezersko, Luče is also a mountaineering village.
From Luče, you can drive to Planina Podvežak, trailhead to Ojstrica (2350 m), and the Dleskovec plateau. You can hike to nearby Mount Raduha (2062 m). And, you can explore the charming herdsmen settlement at Velika Planina (“Big Pasture Plateau”).
Insider Tip | You can also stay in a hut atop Velika Planina: Koča Ojstrica (2 bedrooms), Koča Bistra (3 bedrooms), and Chalet Pehta Velika Planina (3 bedrooms).

Tourist Farm Stoglej
Excellent homegrown food, serenity, and hiking
After three visits to Slovenia, we think Turistična kmetija Stoglej serves the best homegrown, homemade, farm-to-table cuisine in Slovenia.
Their cooking is heart-warming and nourishing. It’ll transport you to your grandma’s kitchen.
Situated on the edge of a forest and surrounded by pastures, this is a place you simply won’t stumble upon. Opt for half board, marvel at their garden, and say hi to the cows.
The rooms are simple but comfortable.
8. Logar Valley
Logar Valley, aka Valley of Magical Realms, Valley of Daydreams, Valley of Elysium… you get the point. LOGAR VALLEY IS HEARTBREAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL!
When I’m trying to meditate, or “go to my happy place,” this is where I go. There’s just no place like it. Sorry for being so sentimental, but you’ll understand when you visit.
Logar Valley is a glacial valley in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps in the Solčavsko Region in Northern Slovenia.
From the valley, you can hike to Slap Rinka Waterfall, the Kamnik Saddle and Planjava, Ojstrica, Rinka Peaks, Ledinski Vrh, etc… You’ve got tons of options.
During your stay in Logar Valley, we recommend also visiting the neighboring glacial valley of Robanov Kot. Here, you can take a leisurely stroll to the Robanov Planina mountain pasture (1 hour).
Don’t leave the valley without grabbing lunch, or dinner at the Turistična kmetija Govc -Vršnik farm.

Lenar Farm
Scenery, hospitality, and location
The historic Lenar Farm is situated in the middle of Logar Valley, surrounded by meadows and apple trees. Of all the places we’ve stayed in Slovenia, this is our very favorite.
The Lenar family loves hosting guests. You never feel like you’re taking too much of their time, or that you’re inconveniencing them with your questions. It’s how every accommodation ought to be, but so few actually are.
The breakfast is fantastic, the rooms are charming, and the animals (2 goats, 1 pig, 2 cats, 2 horses) are friendly.
Tip: Say yes to the blueberry schnapps.
9. Kranjka Gora
Kranjska Gora is an alpine town in northwestern Slovenia, close to the Italian and Austrian borders. It’s also the gateway to the Northern Julian Alps.
Base yourself here for a few days, and you can experience a magical sunset at Lake Jasna, cycle to Zelenci spring, drive to Vršič pass, hike to Slemenova Špica, and visit the nearby Martuljek Waterfalls and Pericnik Falls.
If time allows, venture across the border into Italy to see the majestic Fusine Lakes.
Kranjska Gora is also the ideal place to stay for hikers, who are looking for challenging hiking trails and via ferrata climbs. Experienced via ferrata climbers ought to check out the Mt. Mala Mojstrovka and Prisojnik / Prisank via ferrata routes.
We recommend buying the Cicerone The Julian Alps of Slovenia: Mountain Walks and Short Treks guidebook for trail inspiration.
The first time we visited Kranjska Gora, we hiked from Vršič pass to Lake Bohinj along this 4-day Triglav National Park Traverse. We have since returned several times.

The 8 apartments of Jasna Chalet Resort all have 2 bedrooms, a seating area with sofa, a well-equipped kitchen and dining area, and a private bathroom.

10. Pokljuka Plateau
Pokljuka is a large alpine plateau in the Julian Alps. We love visiting Pokljuka because it feels like time loses meaning altogether. It’s like walking into an enchanted forest, not knowing if you’ll find a way out, and, being completely okay with that.
Though largely forested, you’ll find a collection of dreamy alpine pastures and rural farming villages scattered across the plateau.
Another compelling reason to visit Pokljuka is to hike. It’s the backdoor entrance to the Julian Alps. Starting at an advantageous elevation of 1340 meters, it’s easy to conquer peaks like Viševnik, Debela Peč and Brda, and even Mount Triglav.
