Alta Badia Hotels: Best Boutique, Luxury, 5-Star Hotels in Val Badia

Alta Badia is the South Tyrolean mountain region and ski resort surrounding Upper Val Badia in the heart of the Dolomites in Northern Italy. It comprises the villages of Colfosco, Corvara, San Cassiano (St. Kassian), Badia (Abtei), La Villa (Stern), and La Val. 

Nestled between Puez-Odle Nature Park and the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, Alta Badia offers direct access to numerous hiking trails in summer and extensive ski slopes in winter, including the celebrated Sellaronda ski circuit.

Where to Stay in Alta Badia in Winter 

If you’re visiting Alta Badia for skiing, we recommend staying in Corvara, so that you have direct access to both the Sellaronda circuit and the Alta Badia ski resort.

Colfosco is a direct entry point to the Sellaronda, but requires a bus to reach the other areas of the Alta Badia ski area. 

La Villa and San Cassiano are further away from the Sella Ronda, but well-positioned for skiing in Alta Badia. 

Badia and La Val are the furthest away from the main Alta Badia ski area. If you plan on doing a mix of winter hiking and skiing, don’t overlook Badia. 

It’s worth noting that Alta Badia villages are very small. There is no Alta Badia equivalent to Ortisei in Val Gardena, or Cortina d’Ampezzo, with a large pedestrian center and many independent restaurants. Corvara and San Cassiano offer the most in terms of “village atmosphere.” 

Take advantage of half board whenever you can. Hotel restaurants are excellent and usually far superior than a village pizzeria, which caters exclusively to tourists.

Where to Stay in Alta Badia in Summer and Early Autumn

We have visited Alta Badia numerous times in summer and fall and have personally stayed in Badia, Corvara, La Villa, Colfosco, and San Cassiano. 

If you’re visiting Alta Badia in summer, there’s really no “wrong” place to stay, since distances between the villages are insignificant. Buses link all the areas of Alta Badia, making it easy to get around without a car. 

Colfosco offers direct access to trails in the craggy Cir Group and mighty Sella Group.

Corvara and La Villa are the most central villages in Upper Val Badia. 

San Cassiano is ideal for hiking in the Fanes Group and even in the Ampezzo Dolomites, as it’s a short drive to Passo Valparola and Passo Falzarego.

Badia is the perfect base for hiking Armentara Meadows and exploring Lower Val Badia, including Lungiarü Valley.

La Val is the most remote village and perfect for hikers traveling with a car who want to be far away from crowded, busy areas.

Colfosco Hotels

Colfosco (Kolfuschg, Calfosch) is located between Passo Gardena and Corvara. Those that stay in Colfosco will be treated to unrivaled views of the Sella Group, the colosseum-shaped massif that rises between Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Val Badia, and Arabba. 

Colfosco is a string of hotels and farmsteads, gathered around the serpentine Strada Statale 243. 

In summer, hikers can take advantage of Colfosco’s close proximity to Passo Gardena and hike the Colfosco High Trail, Sass da Ciampac and Rifugio Puez trail, Cima Pisciadu, and Gran Cir. 

Colfosco is also the closest Alta Badia village to Val Gardena. 

In winter, Colfosco is an entry point to the Sellaronda and the family-friendly Edelweiss Valley (Val Stelle Alpina)

Corvara Hotels

The picturesque village of Corvara is centrally located in Alta Badia, between Colfosco and La Villa.  

Mount Sassongher serves as the unmistakable backdrop, lending this village a unique and distinguishing flair. 

Situated on the crossroads of the Sellaronda and the Alta Badia ski resort, Corvara is arguably the best base for skiing. Cableways link the village center to the Pralongià Plateau and the Sella Group. 

In summer, take advantage of the Col Alto gondola to explore the undulating Pralongià Plateau. During our stay in Corvara, we took the bus to Passo Gardena and hiked back to Corvara via Cima Pisciadu. 

Midrange | The very friendly Ciasa De Munt Lifestyle Living strikes just the right balance between urban and the outdoors, with its clean aesthetic, modern elegant lines and prime location. This stylish 4-star property stands out with its top-notch wellness facilities: whirlpool, bio-sauna, steam bath, infrared cabin, Finnish sauna, Kneipp basin, and relaxation room. Guests praise the breakfast buffet. Take advantage of the mountainside breakfast offering in their Piz Boé Alpine Lounge (2200 meters). 

Midrange | Hotel Pradat is a family-run, 3-star hotel with cozy, woody Tyrolean rooms, an on-site Ladin restaurant, and a modern wellness area with 3 saunas. 5-night minimum stay requirement. 

Adults-Only Luxury Hotel | Hotel Arkadia is a 4-star hotel in Corvara, with a panoramic swimming pool, sauna area, cardio room, Bar-Bistrot, and award-winning fine dining restaurant, Burjè 1968. Half board only. Many rooms have been recently renovated, but not all. 

Luxury Family Aparthotel | Movi Family Apart-Hotel offers new and stylish apartments for families. This modern property blends everything we love about a hotel (amenities and breakfast buffet) with everything we love about an apartment (self-sufficiency and space). Extra Perks: kids and family spa area with pool, adults-only spa, summer outdoor playpark, entertainment for kids (ages 3-12). 

Luxury | Hotel Marmolada is an excellent 4-star hotel with rustic, woody interiors, enjoyable sauna and pool facilities and a satiating breakfast. Half board is available. When booking, pay attention to room categories: many rooms are newly renovated, but not all.

Luxury | The 4-star Hotel Col Alto occupies a central location in Corvara. We stayed in Col after trekking the Alta Via 1 and The Col Alto staff coordinated our laundry pick-up quickly, let us check-in early, and answered our 101 hiking questions. Beyond the excellent and accommodating service we received, Hotel Col Alto stands out with its extensive spa landscape, comfortable lounge, and generous half board offering. For the most comfortable experience, book a suite. 

5-star Luxury | Housed in an 18th century building, the family-run Hotel La Perla attracts travelers with its charming alpine interiors, multiple restaurants, and a spa. Breakfast and dinner, both included in the room rate, are served in the hotel’s Les Stües restaurant. If you’d like to dine in the hotel’s 1-star Michelin restaurant, La Stüa de Michil, it’s necessary to make a reservation in advance.

La Villa Hotels

Surrounded by wide-open meadows rolling from the base of the Fanes massif, La Villa (Stern) commands the most romantic setting in Alta Badia. 

Located between Corvara, San Cassiano, and Badia, La Villa is an excellent base for hiking in summer.

Ride the Gardenaccia chairlift and hike to the charming Rifugio Gardenacia and continue across the Gardenacia plateau to Rifugio Puez. Take the bus to Badia and ride the Santa Croce cableways up to the Santa Croce / Heiligkreuz church and cross the Armentara meadows. 

In winter, La Villa beckons expert skiers with its Gran Risa World Cup grade piste. The Piz La Ila gondola links La Villa with Pralongia. 

Midrange | Hotel Rezia is a comfortable and welcoming 3-star hotel with well-kept rooms, kind staff, and extraordinary food (half board recommended). In winter, guests are shuttled to the Piz La Ila gondola.

Luxury | Hotel Ciasa Soleil is an intimate boutique hotel in La Villa, ideal for those traveling without a car. This lovely hotel wowed us with its excellent cuisine, unbeatable sunset views of the Fanes Group from the hot tub, terrace and dining room, and striking design. 

Luxury | The lovingly-run Hotel La Majun exudes luxury in the shape of gourmet Ladin cuisine (half board available), modern rooms, and an elegant atmosphere. Spectacular mountain views make any stay here unforgettable.

Luxury | The 4-star-superior Hotel Cristallo – Wellness Mountain Living, set halfway between La Villa and Corvara, pampers guests with its heavenly wellness facilities, high-quality half board offering, and stylish rooms.

Badia Hotels

The valley narrows around Badia, which results in dramatic views of the Heiligkreuzkofel group of Fanes. 

In summer and winter, you can visit Santa Croce pilgrimage church and the impossibly dreamy Armentara Meadows. 

It’s worth venturing to Lungiarü and its historic hamlets in the Valley of the Mills. We loved the hike to Ütia Ciampcios, as described in our Alta Badia summer guide. 

Budget | Chalet Planvart is a great value B&B in Badia. 

Midrange | Hotel Melodia del Bosco is a family-run hotel in Badia offering newly-renovated rooms, excellent breakfasts, heart-expanding Dolomites views, a spa (Finnish sauna, alpine herbs sauna, steam sauna, relaxation area, gym), and an on-site restaurant.

San Cassiano Hotels 

San Cassiano lies between La Villa and Passo Falzarego. 

San Cassiano is the only village in Alta Badia with a pedestrian zone and a concentrated village atmosphere. 

In winter, skiers access Pralongià with the Piz Sorega gondola. 

In summer, follow the Path of the Larches to Rudiferia and continue onwards to the Santa Croce pilgrimage church. Tackle Piz dles Cunturines and other prominent peaks in the Fanes Group. Or, hike from Capanna Alpina to Rifugio Fanes. 

Drive up to Passo Valparola to hike the semi-secured Kaiserjägersteig (Sentiero Kaiserjäger) to Rifugio Lagazuoi. Or, continue over Passo Falzarego to hike to Cinque Torri and Rifugio Nuvolau. 

Midrange | Hotel Conturines is a very hospitable hotel in the heart of the pedestrian zone of San Cassiano, offering comfortable rooms, high-quality breakfasts and dinners, and a small spa area. Minimum stay requirement in high season.

Luxury Aparthotel | Lagació Hotel Mountain Residence ingeniously blends rustic alpine charm with modern comforts. Guests enjoy spacious apartments with kitchens as well as a wonderful spa area and daily breakfast. 

5-star Hotel | Hotel Fanes dazzles with its first-class spa facilities and skypool, phenomenal food, flawless staff, and magical setting. Breakfast, a Marende (afternoon snack buffet), and dinner are included in the rate. Minimum stay requirement in high season.

La Val Hotels 

La Val (La Valle in Italian, Wengen in German), 1353 m, is the most secluded of all Alta Badia villages. 

The hillside hamlet is ideal for exploring the lesser-known areas of Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Puez-Odle Nature Park like Antersasc Valley and Lungiarü Valley.

We only recommend staying here if you’re traveling with a car. 

Though La Val is not the best base for skiing, guests will be happy to know that there is a ski bus that links La Val with La Villa. And, Hotel Plan Murin has a spacious ski storage and drying room.  

Midrange | The lovely Hotel Plan Murin is a gem with its modern, minimalist interiors, on-site restaurant, spa area (2 saunas and relaxation room), and stunning mountain views. 3 nights minimum stay.
