Dolomites Itinerary 10-14 Days: Start in Venice, Milan, Munich, or Verona

How much time do you need in the Dolomites? You need months and years. But, if you have 10-14 days, that’s a good start.

The purpose of this itinerary is to outline how to spend 10 days or 2 weeks in the Dolomites in Northern Italy.

If you need any other information about this region, take a look at these 80+ Dolomites guides and consult our Dolomites Travel Guide

For a shorter route, check out our 5 Day Dolomites Road Trip and our 7 Day Dolomites Road Trip

The best way to structure a 10 day Dolomites itinerary is to choose three bases.

  • 3 Nights in Val Gardena
  • 2 Nights in San Martino di Castrozza
  • 4 Nights in Cortina d’Ampezzo

The best way to structure a 2 week Dolomites itinerary is to choose 4-5 bases and divide your time as equally as possible:

  • 3 Nights in Val Gardena
  • 2 Nights in San Martino di Castrozza
  • 4 Nights in Cortina d’Ampezzo
  • 2 Nights in Alta Badia
  • 2 Nights in Val di Funes

You can start this 10-14 Day Dolomites itinerary from any nearby airport, or destination. Read How to Get to the Dolomites for info on the closest airports, train stations, and bus terminals.

If you’re starting your trip in Venice, or Treviso, drive first to Cortina d’Ampezzo, continue to Val Gardena, and end in San Martino di Castrozza. For the 2 week variation, insert Alta Badia and Val di Funes before Val Gardena.

This itinerary requires a car. We recommend using the Discovercars.com car rental reservation platform to search for and book car rentals in Europe. This easy-to-use booking platform compares car rental deals from 500+ trusted providers, so that you can choose the best option for your trip. Check car rental rates here

In this Dolomites road trip map, each color signifies a different Dolomites region. Click the icons and trails to display further information about each destination and hike.

Days 1 – 3: Val Gardena

Puez-Odle Nature Park, Col Raiser, Dolomites

Day 1: Drive to Val Gardena

Val Gardena (Gherdëina in Ladin, Gröden in German) is a valley in South Tyrol, which stretches between Valle Isarco (Eisacktal in German) and Sella Pass and Gardena Pass.

Snuggled between Puez-Odle Nature Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Sassolungo Group and Sella Group, Val Gardena offers direct access to Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, and Vallunga Valley.

Here’s the approximate driving distances from nearby airports to Val Gardena:

  • Bolzano Airport (BZO), Italy: 50 minutes
  • Innsbruck Airport (INN), Austria: 1:30 hours
  • Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), Italy: 3:15 hours
  • Treviso Airport (TSF), Italy: 3:11 hours
  • Verona Airport (VRN), Italy: 2:10 hours
  • Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), Italy: 4:20 hours
  • Munich Airport (MUC), Germany: 3:35 hours

If you have time to explore Val Gardena on your arrival day, we recommend doing something low-key like walking Vallunga Valley (1-2 hours), hiking up to Baita Sëurasas (2 hours), or exploring Alpe di Siusi (4 hours) along this Alpe di Siusi Meadows Circuit Trail.

Stay 3 nights in either Santa Cristina, or Selva di Val Gardena. Read Best Val Gardena Hotels for an overview of the best accommodations in the valley.

Santa Cristina Accommodations: Smart Hotel Saslong (budget), Charme Hotel Uridl (midrange), or Dorfhotel Beludei (top choice – luxury)

Selva di Val Gardena Accommodations: Hotel Garni Morene (budget), Linder Cycling Hotel (luxury), or Hotel Tyrol (luxury)

Days 2 – 3: Hike in Val Gardena

For the next few days, you have a plethora of hiking options, all summarized in Best Hikes in Val Gardena

Here’s what we recommend:

Easy Hikes:

Moderate Hikes:

Difficult Hikes:

Via Ferratas

Days 4 – 5: San Martino di Castrozza

Pale di San Martino, Dolomites

Day 4: Drive from Val Gardena to San Martino di Castrozza

The drive from Val Gardena to San Martino di Castrozza is one to be savored. Without stops, the 89.2 km drive takes 2:14 hours.

The route leads over Passo Sella to Val di Fassa. We suggest detouring to Passo Pordoi in order to hike the Viel del Pan trail (2:30 – 3 hours). This lovely path affords jaw-dropping views of the glaciated Marmolada (3343 m), the highest mountain in the Dolomites.

The drive continues to Canazei and through Val di Fassa.

If you’re eager to see Lake Carezza and the Vajolet Towers, you can detour to Val d’Ega and stay 1-2 nights in Carezza, or Nova Levante.

Otherwise continue east to San Pellegrino and south to Passo Rolle. Park at Passo Rolle and hike to Baita Segantini.

From Passo Rolle, the road twists down Primero Valley to San Martino di Castrozza, the alpine resort wedged between the mountains of Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park.

Stay 2 nights in San Martino di CastrozzaResidence Taufer (budget), Hotel Vienna (midrange), or Sayonara Nature & Wellness Hotel (luxury)

Day 5: Hike in the Pale di San Martino Dolomites

There are so many enthralling hiking trails in the Pale di San Martino mountains. Our favorite hikes are the Pala di San Martino Circuit Trail and the Val Venegia to Rifugio Mulaz Circuit Trail

If you’re looking for something more moderate, you can ascend to the moon-like Pale di San Martino plateau (with cableways) and hike to Cima Rosetta. Later in the day, you can venture to Val Venegia and walk to Malga Venegiota.

If you didn’t hike to Baita Segantini yesterday, head up there tonight for sunset.

Days 6 – 9: Cortina d’Ampezzo

Val Formin, Croda da Lago Circuit Hike, Dolomites

Day 6: Drive from San Martino di Castrozza to Cortina d’Ampezzo

The 87.7 km drive from San Martino di Castrozza to Cortina d’Ampezzo takes 2:10 hours. The drive leads northeast to Passo Giau via Alleghe and Selva di Cadore.

At Passo Giau, stretch your legs, take a photo of the striking Ra Gusela mountain, and consider hiking to the Mondeval Plateau.

The drive continues to Ponte di Rocurto, the starting point for the Croda da Lago and Lago Federa hikes.

Continue to Pocolo and all the way down to Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Stay 4 nights in Cortina d’Ampezzo: Hotel Meuble Oasi (budget), Baita Fraina (midrange), Hotel Villa Alpina (midrange), Ambra Cortina Luxury&Fashion Hotel (midrange-luxury), Camina Suite & Spa (luxury),  HOTEL de LËN (luxury), Dolomiti Lodge Alverà (luxury), or Grand Hotel Savoia Cortina d’Ampezzo (luxury).

Alternatively, you can stay in any town in Alta Pusteria (Hochpustertal in German, Upper Puster Valley in English).

We particularly like San Candido (Innichen in German), which has an atmospheric town center and lovely accommodations: Residence Silvia (budget), Residence Kugler (apartments), Post Hotel – Tradition & Lifestyle Adults Only (luxury), ATTO Suites & Cuisine (luxury apartments), and Naturhotel Leitlhof (luxury).

Day 7: Ampezzo Dolomites

On day 7 of your Dolomites itinerary, we suggest exploring the mountains encircling Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Recommended Trails:

For more ideas, read our Cortina d’Ampezzo Hiking Guide.

Day 8: Sesto/Sexten Dolomites

The Sexten Dolomites are located northeast of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

This magnificent range is made-up of many striking mountains including Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen in German, Three Peaks in English), the Cadini di Misurina Group, Croda Rossa di Sesto (Sextner Rotwand), Punta dei Tre Scarperi (Dreischusterspitze), and many more.

The most popular hike in the Sexten Dolomites is the easy-moderate loop trail around Tre Cime di Lavaredo. This hike starts at Rifugio Auronzo, accessible by the Rifugio Auronzo Toll Road.

While that’s a wonderful hike, it’s teeming with visitors, and getting busier and busier each year.

A more interesting approach to Tre Cime di Lavaredo is from Val Campo di Dentro (Innerfeldtal), a side valley of Sesto Valley. This Torre dei Scarperi Circuit Trail is a thrilling and quiet hiking trail, which takes 6:20 hours. It entails some secured scrambling (no exposure and no special equipment needed).

Experience alpine hikers should consider the Sentiero Bonacossa trail, which is a secured hiking path (“Sentiero Attrezzato”), which leads through the Cadini di Misurina trail from Rifugio Col de Varda (accessible by a chairlift from Lake Misurina) to the Cadini di Misurina Viewpoint and onwards to Rifugio Auronzo.

Here’s our guide to the Sentiero Bonacossa North Trail

For easy-going adventuring, you can drive to Sesto and walk Val Fiscalina and hike from Pratti di Croda Rossa (Rotwandwiesen) Meadows to Passo Monte Croce (Kreuzbergpass) mountain pass. Read about this trail in our Sexten Dolomites Hiking Guide

Day 9: Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park

On day 9 of your Dolomites itinerary, you can continue exploring the Ampezzo Dolomites, or venture north to Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park.

If you visit Lago di Braies, we recommend hiking to Hochalpenkopf Peak.

If you visit the Prato Piazza Plateau, we recommend hiking to Monte Specie and the Gaisl High Trail

Days 10 – 11: Alta Badia

Sella Group, Dolomites

Day 10: Drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Badia, Alta Badia

The 34.8 km drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo to Badia in Alta Badia takes 50 minutes. The drive leads to Col Galina, the Cinque Torri and Rifugio Nuvolau trailhead, and up to Passo Falzarego. Continue over Passo Valparola and down to San Cassiano in Val Badia.

We recommend driving through the valley to the village of Badia, so that you can hike across the Armentara Meadows. The Armentara Meadows are located on the Armentara Plateau beneath the impressive Sasso di Santa Croce Group, on the western edge of Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park.

Alta Badia is made-up of several villages: Corvara, Colfosco, San Cassiano, La Val, La Villa, and Badia. I recommend finding the best accommodation for your budget in any town.

Stay 2 nights in Alta Badia:

Colfosco Accommodations: Pension Mirandola (budget-midrange), Crëp Sella (midrange), Kolfuschgerhof (luxury)

Corvara Accommodations: Hotel Col Alto (luxury), Hotel Marmolada (luxury), Hotel La Perla (luxury)

La Villa Accommodations: Ciasa Agreiter (budget), Hotel La Majun (luxury), or Hotel Cristallo – Wellness Mountain Living (luxury)

Badia Accommodations: Chalet Planvart (budget), or Badia Hill (luxury)

San Cassiano Accommodations: Lagació Hotel Mountain Residence (luxury apartments)

Day 11: Explore Alta Badia

Alta Badia is this stunning mountain region surrounding Upper Val Badia Valley, between the Sella Group, Puez Group, and Fanes Group.

Today, we recommend heading up to Passo Gardena in order to hike to Cima Pisciadù in the Sella Group or Sass da Ciampac in the Cir Group.

If you’re staying in Colfosco, or Corvara, you could take a bus up to Passo Gardena and hike back to your hotel from either trail. If you’re staying in La Villa, you could also take a bus to Passo Gardena and hike back to La Villa via Sass da Ciampac and Rifugio Gardenacia.

For more ideas, read our Alta Badia Summer Guide.

Days 12 – 14: Val di Funes

Chiesetta di San Giovanni a Ranui / Church of St. John of Nepomuk in Ranui

Day 12: Drive from Alta Badia to Val di Funes

The drive from Alta Badia to Santa Maddalena (St. Magdalena) in Val di Funes  is ~51 km and takes 1:23 hours. Drive north along SS244 in the direction of  Bruneck/Brunico. At San Martino in Badia, veer left on the serpentine mountain road SP29 to Passo delle Erbe.

Passo delle Erbe (Würzjoch) is the mountain pass that links Val Badia with Valle di Eores (Aferer Tal). It’s also the starting point of the fabulous Sass de Putia Circuit Trail, which we highly recommend hiking.

From Passo delle Erbe, drive 35 minutes to Santa Maddalena in Val di Funes, one of the most heavenly places in the Dolomites.

For golden hour and sunset, hike up to the Santa Maddalena church viewpoint situated along the Santa Maddalena Panorama Trail.

Stay 2 nights in Val di FunesAppartements Pension Sonia (budget), Fallerhof (Budget), Hotel Fines (Midrange), Proihof (midrange), or Hotel Tyrol (Luxury).

Day 13: Hike in Val di Funes

Val di Funes stretches from Valle Isarco (Eisacktal) to the base of the Odle (Geisler) peaks. Though stunning from the Seceda ridge, the Odle spires are just as spectacularly menacing from Val di Funes.

Today, you can hike: Adolf Munkel Trail (easy), Rifugio Genova (moderate), or Tullen Peak (difficult).

Tonight, watch the sunset from the platform overlooking Chiesetta di San Giovanni in Ranui (Kirchen St. Johann in Ranui).

Day 14: Depart the Dolomites

If time allows, we recommend hiking another trail in Val di Funes.

For those heading north to Austria and Germany, it’s a 1 hour drive from Santa Maddalena to the Brenner Pass.

For those heading to the Bolzano Airport, it’s a 50 minute drive.

For those heading to the Verona Airport, it’s a 2:20 hour drive.

  1. Hi there, we are a group of 15 and will be arriving to hike in the Dolomites in September, staying 4 nights in Santa Cristina and 4 more in the Alta Badia/Arabba area. We are looking to plan our day hikes in a way that makes them as connected as possible (ie resembling a multi-day hike but in daily stages). Do you have a recommendation how to plan the trails in the area in this way? Thanks!

    • Hi Corina,

The Alta Via 2 runs through Puez-Odle and continues across the Sella Group. Perhaps, that route my inspire your trip planning.

Take a look at our map of best day hikes in the Dolomites… that may help with figuring out how to connect trails.

      Kindly,
      Sabrina
